Acharya Thaniyans

Thanians with Meanings

What is a Thanian?
Thanian is a Tamil word. It means “eulogistic devotional verse” (praising the Glory of an individual Acharya). An Acharya dispels the darkness of the mind and enlightens us with knowledge. It represents our involvement, our sincerity, our duty, and our respect towards our Acharya. Acharyas are many and thanians are also many. Depending upon the acharya Parampara, thanians will also differ. There may be two thanians for the same Acharya depending upon their vaibhavam. A thanian may be small or big but have the same respect. The greatness of the thanian can really be understood only by the those, who have “Acharya sambandham”. It is essential that one should learn and recite the thanian of his Acharya everyday and be blessed.

There are thanians for vedhantha rahasya granthAs also. Only after recitation of the thanian, one can undergo Kalakshepam of the Grantha . In all Sri Vaishnava institutions like Srimath Andavan Ashramam, Parakala mutt and Sri Ahobila mutt etc. thanians of poorvacharyas are being recited everyday.

With the grace and blessings of asmath Acharya, Srimath Andavan, I submit this article. It consists of the general meaning of the thanians of the poorvacharyas of Srimath Srirangam Andavan Ashramam. It starts from the thanian of Prakrutham Srimath Andavan, Sri Ranga Ramanuja Maha Desikan, proceeds upwards in ascending order and ends with the thanian of Sriman Narayana, the earliest of the preceptors, in Sri Vaishnava parampara.(ref: Sevakala Sarrumurai Kramam, Srirangam Srimad Andavan Ashramam). Any mistakes in the meanings of the thanians are solely adiyen’s and I seek pardom from bhagavathas in Advance.

Some interesting incidents are highlighted in this posting that have mutually served both the sampradAyA and highlights the cordiality that has existed from those days.

Parasparam BhAvayantha:

Srimath PeriAndavan had given Sanyasam to two disciples from Velia Nallur.-both of them were cousins

1. Brahmachari VELia Nallur Sri NArAyana MahA dEsikan

2. VELia Nallur Paduka Sevaka Ramanuja Maha Desikan (ChinnAndavan)

Brahmachari Sri Narayana Maha Desikan gave sanyasam to Sri Poundarikapuram Srinivasa Maha Desikan in the year 1900. There was no Acharya for ahobila matham from 1900 to 1905. Poundarikapuram Srimath Andavan gave sanyasam to Thirukkudanthai Sri U.Ve.Chakravarthy Swamy who became 38th jeer for Sri Ahobila matham in the Visuvavasu year Adi mAdham (1905 July)as Sri Srinivasa satakopa yatheendra maha Desikan.

There was no Acharya for Srirangam Srimath Andavan Peria Asramam also from Vijaya varusham Thai mAdham(1894 jan/ feb to 1905 july/aug ) to Visuvavasu varusham Avani madham (for a period of 11 years and 6 months). So, Srimath SatakOpa yatheendra mahA Desikan -38th jeer of Sri Ahobila matham) gave sanyasam to 76 years old disciple of Sri PeriAndavan , SadhAvadhAni Thirukudanthai Sri Varadha Vedhanthachar swamy, in the same year Visuvavasu 1905 Avani (july/aug) and he was called Srimad Thirukudanthai Andavan Sri Srinivasa Ramanuja Maha Desikan (also known as Srimath Kadanthethi Andavan).

Srimath KadanthEthi Andavan gave sanyasam to Therazhundhur Sri Varadhachar swamy in the year 1908 September (keelaka varusham Avani Madham) who was known as Sri Vedhantha Ramanuja Maha Desikan(also known as Nammandavan).

Srimad NammAndavan gave Sanyasam to RajamannArkovil Vyakarana mahA vidwAn Sri U.Ve. Rangachar swami. He was earlier nominated by 38 th jeer as his successor. But His Holiness the 38th jeer, who was ailing, gave instructions to his successor, before adorning Thirunadu , to receive sanyasam from Srimath NammAndavan. So After H.H. 38th jeer adorned Thirunadu, Sri U.Ve. VyAkaranam RangAchAr Swamy received sanyasam from NammAndavan at Nrusimhapuram , and became 39th jeer, in the year May 1909 .He was known as Sri ParAnkusa Yatheendra MahA Desikan)
